Organización política fundada en Francia en 1860 con el propósito de brindar asistencia a los judíos.
Sus fundadores eran un grupo de judíos franceses que disponían de recursos para ayudar a los pobres, ofreciendo apoyo político, facilitando la emigración y finalmente estableciendo programas de educación judía en Europa oriental, Medio Oriente y África del norte. En 1945 manifestó su apoyo al
sionismo político (que buscaba la creación de un estado judío) y en 1946 sus actividades diplomáticas fueron asumidas por el Consejo consultivo de organizaciones judías en Nueva York.
